Meaning of Being Born-Again

Part 1 - What Does It Mean to Be a Born-Again Believer?

According to the book of Romans, in the Bible, anyone—regardless of religious background, culture, or past—who repents of their sins and confesses Jesus Christ as Lord becomes a born-again believer.

Romans 10:9"...if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved."

Jesus communicated this same truth to Nicodemus, a respected Jewish rabbi who came to Him seeking the path to eternal life. Jesus made it clear that something more than natural birth is required to enter the Kingdom of God.

John 3:5–6"Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit."

Jesus' words make it clear that while every human being experiences a natural, physical birth, no one is born a Christian—regardless of what their parents believe. To become a child of God, we must experience a second birth: a spiritual birth brought about by the Holy Spirit. This new birth marks the beginning of the Christian life and opens the door to everything God desires for His children.

If you are reading this and are unsure whether you have been born again, you can settle that question today by responding to God in the following way.

1. Acknowledge that you are a sinner.

Recognize that, apart from Jesus Christ, your destiny is eternal separation from God.

Romans 3:10–13, 23; Romans 6:23

Deep down, every honest heart knows it has fallen short of God's perfect standard and is powerless to redeem itself. Before anyone can receive God's gift of salvation, they must first acknowledge their need for it. Humility and confession are the first steps toward salvation.

2. Repent of your sins.

Acts 3:19

Repentance is more than simply feeling sorry for sin. It is a decisive change of heart and mind that results in a change of direction—a turning away from sin and turning toward God.

Whenever possible, genuine repentance also seeks to make restitution for wrongs committed against others. If you have stolen, return what was taken. If you have lied, seek to make it right. True repentance produces a sincere desire to walk in obedience to God and to set things right wherever possible.

3. Believe that Jesus died on the cross for your sins.

Romans 5:8; 1 John 2:2

Jesus Christ took your place and bore the punishment that you deserved. There was nothing you could do to save yourself from the penalty and power of sin, but Jesus accomplished everything necessary for your salvation through His death and resurrection.

Respond to His sacrifice with gratitude and faith, knowing that His precious blood was shed for you personally.

4. Believe that Jesus is who He claimed to be—the Lord of all—and receive Him as your Lord and Savior.

Romans 10:9; John 1:12; John 8:24

The resurrection of Jesus Christ validates every claim He made. Because He is alive, He is able to forgive your sins, transform your life, and reign as your Lord.

By faith, receive Him into your heart and surrender your life to Him. This means choosing to no longer live for yourself, but to live for Jesus Christ from this day forward.

If you have carefully considered these four truths, understand them, and are willing to receive God's gracious offer of salvation, you may express your faith by praying sincerely from your heart:

“Lord Jesus, I acknowledge that I am a sinner. Thank You for dying on the cross for my sins and redeeming me. I believe that God raised You from the dead, proving that You are Lord of all. I repent of my sins and receive You now as my Lord and Savior. Thank You for forgiving my sins and making me Your child. I want to follow You faithfully from this day forward, with Your help. Amen.”

If you have prayed this prayer sincerely, trusting in Jesus Christ alone for your salvation, then according to God's Word, you are a born-again believer. The Holy Spirit now dwells within you, and you have become a child of God. Your journey of following Christ has just begun. Read the Bible daily, spend time in prayer, and become part of a Bible-believing church where you can grow in your faith and fellowship with other believers.

Part 2 - Ok, I Am Born Again. What Is Next?

Since you have sincerely received God's offer of salvation, you are now a new creation in Christ!

2 Corinthians 5:17"Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creature; the old things passed away; behold, new things have come."

What has just happened to you is remarkable. God has put your old self (the old man) to death and created within you a new self (the new man). However, your flesh remains unchanged until the day you receive your glorified body. Some Bible translations refer to the flesh as the "sinful nature." The desires of the flesh—selfishness, lust, the love of money, anger, pride, and many others—remain present and continually seek to regain control of your life.

It is important to distinguish between the old man and the flesh, because they are not the same. Your self-will belongs to the flesh.

But God, in His mercy, has not left you to fight this battle alone. When you were born again, He gave you the Holy Spirit, poured His love into your heart, and supplied you with His grace so that you can overcome temptation and experience the abundant life Jesus promised.

Romans 6:14"For sin shall not be master over you, for you are not under law but under grace."

2 Peter 1:3"His divine power has granted to us everything pertaining to life and godliness, through the true knowledge of Him who called us by His own glory and excellence."

God has already provided everything you need for godly living. He has poured His love into your heart (Romans 5:5; 1 John 3:1), given you His Holy Spirit (Titus 3:5–6), and lavished His grace upon you (Ephesians 1:7–8).

Now begins a lifelong journey of walking with Him by faith.

Practically speaking, this means living a life of simple obedience to His commandments. This is how we express our gratitude for what He has done for us.

John 14:15"If you love Me, you will keep My commandments."

Every commandment confronts our self-will. What prevents us from obeying God is our own desire to satisfy the flesh. Therefore, obedience always involves denying ourselves.

Jesus instructed every believer:

Luke 9:23"If anyone wishes to come after Me, he must deny himself, and take up his cross daily and follow Me."

The pain we experience in denying ourselves is part of the cost of following Christ. That is why Jesus also said:

Matthew 7:14"For the gate is small and the way is narrow that leads to life, and there are few who find it."

Denying ourselves, taking up our cross daily, and walking the narrow road all describe the same reality: putting our own will aside so that God's will is accomplished in our lives.

Walking by faith simply means allowing God's truth—not our feelings—to direct our choices.

2 Corinthians 5:7"For we walk by faith, not by sight."

For example, God's Word commands us to:

Philippians 4:4"Rejoice in the Lord always."

Our feelings may respond, "There is nothing to rejoice about."

Walking by faith means choosing God's truth over our emotions. Instead of following our feelings, we stand upon His promise:

Hebrews 13:5"I will never desert you, nor will I ever forsake you."

Because His presence never leaves us, we can choose to rejoice even when our emotions say otherwise.

Our obedience should never be motivated by fear, obligation, or the hope of earning rewards. Rather, it should flow naturally from gratitude for what Christ has already done for us.

God has already poured His love into our hearts.

Romans 5:5"The love of God has been poured out within our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us."

Imagine that while you were struggling to survive with only one dollar, a wealthy man deposited one billion dollars into your bank account. Immediately afterward, he sent you a receipt confirming that the transaction had been completed.

Can you imagine your joy? You would be overwhelmed with gratitude. Every day you would enjoy the benefits of what had been freely given to you.

Now suppose a few weeks later this same man asked you to help him with a simple task.

Would you help him reluctantly, wondering what you would receive in return?

Or would you gladly serve him because you know you could never repay what he has already done for you?

Romans 5:5 is like that receipt. God has poured His divine love into your heart through the Holy Spirit. That gift is beyond measure.

If we obey Christ merely to receive rewards—or if we obey with a complaining spirit—it reveals that we have not fully appreciated the treasure we have already received.

Jesus taught this same principle.

Luke 7:47"He who is forgiven little, loves little."

The more deeply we understand how much God has forgiven us, the more joyfully we will obey Him.

Beginning today, you have started a lifelong journey with the final destination of becoming like Jesus..

Romans 8:29"...to become conformed to the image of His Son..."

1 John 3:2–3 reminds us that one day we shall be like Him, and everyone who has this hope continually pursues holiness.

What Happens When You Fail?

Failure will be part of your journey.

When you fail, remember two wonderful promises and commands from God.

1 John 1:9"If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness."

Hebrews 3:7–8"Today if you hear His voice, do not harden your hearts..."

When you fail, never blame anyone or anything.

Do not blame:

  • God, as though He failed to give you enough grace.

  • Other people, as though they forced you to sin.

  • Your circumstances, as though they removed your ability to obey.

  • The devil, as though he made you sin.

Temptation may come from many directions, but sin is ultimately our own choice.

Instead, take ownership.

Confess your sin honestly before God. If your sin has affected another person, confess it to them as well and seek reconciliation whenever possible.

God promises forgiveness and restoration.

Psalm 16:11 reminds us:

"In Your presence is fullness of joy."

Someone once compared this to two animals.

A pig falls into the mud and enjoys staying there.

A cat falls into the mud but immediately wants to get out and become clean.

As believers, God calls us to respond like the cat. We may fall, but we should immediately confess our sin, receive His forgiveness, and continue walking with Him.

Be Baptized

One of Christ's first commands to every new believer is to be baptized in water.

Matthew 28:19–20"Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit..."

Water baptism does not save you. Rather, it is the outward testimony of the inward transformation God has already accomplished.

Therefore, it is wise to obey this command as soon as possible after becoming a believer.

Become Part of a Local Church

God never intended Christians to live in isolation.

Become part of a Bible-believing local church where you can worship, learn, grow, and serve alongside other believers.

Serve joyfully—not to earn God's favor, but because of the grace you have already received.

Acts 20:35"It is more blessed to give than to receive."

Read and Treasure God's Word

Make reading God's Word a daily habit.

The Bible is God's love letter to you. Through it, He reveals His character, His promises, and His will for your life.

As you read, meditate on Scripture and memorize it. The Holy Spirit will use God's Word to strengthen you and help you resist temptation.

Psalm 119:11"Your word I have treasured in my heart, that I may not sin against You."

Psalm 119:105"Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path."

God's Word is like a GPS that continually guides you toward your destination—Christlikeness.

May the Lord bless you, strengthen you, and fill you with joy as you walk with Him every day until you see Him face to face.
